Celebrate 35 Years of the ADA: Support Disability-Owned Small Businesses in SF

July marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)—a milestone in advancing rights and access for people with disabilities. One powerful way to honor this achievement is by supporting small businesses owned and operated by people with disabilities right here in San Francisco.

Why it matters:
Entrepreneurs with disabilities face persistent barriers to funding, visibility, and opportunity. Supporting their businesses helps build a more inclusive, equitable economy.

Start with delicious and creative places to shop and support:

Bakeworks – A café in Hayes Valley staffed by adults with developmental disabilities, providing hands-on job training.

Creativity Explored – A studio and gallery showcasing art by disabled artists. Shop in person or online.

Mozzeria – A Deaf-owned pizzeria (now catering only) known for its ASL-first service model.

For more ideas:

SF Disability Business Alliance (SFDBA) – Connects and supports over 150 disability-owned small businesses.

Other ways to support disability-owned businesses:

  • Hire or contract with inclusive service providers
  • Refer others to shop and support
  • When purchasing from large corporations, check if they have a Supplier Diversity Program and someone who manages it

Let’s honor the ADA by lifting up local businesses that reflect the strength and creativity of SF’s disability community.
