Emergency Preparedness

May 9, 2025 by Kate Kuckro

Building Community Resilience

Preparing, connecting, and sharing information now will help us respond more effectively when emergencies strike.

In recent years, we’ve faced one challenge after another—some sudden, others long-standing but growing in urgency. These include:

  • More frequent heat alerts
  • Rising days with poor air quality due to wildfires
  • Persistent risk of a major earthquake
  • Ongoing threats to communities of color
  • The slow pace of closing the digital divide, especially as health care and essential services shift online
  • We’re building on the knowledge and materials we’ve developed while bringing in new staff and resources. At the heart of our work are peer-to-peer networks that empower neighbors to create and carry out preparedness plans tailored to their specific communities.

Emergency Preparedness Flyers

Emergencies can happen anytime. Preparation can save lives.

That’s why our team redesigned the Emergency Preparedness for Seniors & People with Disabilities flyer to be more accessible and user-friendly. It’s now available in four languages: English, Spanish, Cantonese, Russian, and Tagalog.

What’s inside:

  • Planning Ahead: Steps to get ready now
  • The 72-Hour Rule: What to include in your emergency kit
  • Evacuation Planning: Create a plan that meets your needs
  • Earthquake Safety: What to do before, during, and after
  • Vial of Life: Why accessible medical info matters
  • Smoke & Heat: How to protect yourself in extreme conditions

Are You Prepared?

Plan Ahead

When disaster hits, community matters. Being prepared starts with small acts—greeting neighbors, chatting with your local grocer, and staying in touch with loved ones both online and offline. Visit  SF72 for tips and start creating your own plan.

Start Simple with the Vial of Life

CLC and the California Alliance for Retired Americans (CARA) are teaming up to promote a simple, lifesaving tool: the Vial of Life.
Download the Vial of Life form and learn how it can help first responders in an emergency.

Mobilize through CLC Programs

Join our Neighbor-to-Neighbor Activities focused on Emergency Preparedness and Climate Action. Offered in partnership with the SF Department of Disability and Aging Services and funded by the California Volunteers Office of the Governor.

Build Neighborhood Networks – In Person and Online
Our Community Connector and Food Delivery Network programs help you meet neighbors and learn from staff and guest experts about how to stay safe.
