Art Viewing Adventures: : When Art Came to Its Senses – Dutch Art in the 17th Century (Virtual)
Mon December 11, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Renaissance paintings were conceived of as stages on which characters enacted scenes from the Bible and classical texts. Paintings were meant to be read like stories. In contrast, painters of 17th century Holland developed an art that strove for faithful descriptions of the natural and social world. Instead of a textual culture, these artists contributed to the emergence of a truly visual culture.
How did that happen? New technologies and the rise of empiricism — a conviction that observation must be the basis of knowledge —are one part of the answer. Markets are another. Nick Despota has combined illustrations and quotations from this age with the brilliant works of 17th century painters to tell this fascinating story.
