Art Viewing Adventures: Flo Allen: A Favorite Model for Bay Area Artists (Virtual)
Mon January 11, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Though images of the human figure are an ever-popular subject in art, we often know very little about the people they depict. Florence “Flo” Wysinger Allen (1913-97) was a much sought-after model in the Bay Area and the subject of artworks by David Park, Joan Brown, Wayne Thiebaud and many others. She often posed nude and was portrayed in many different ways. This program will allow us to see the same model depicted by different artists and using different materials.
Flo Allen came from a family of African-American activists and played a leadership role in founding the San Francisco Models’ Guild. She went on to have a newspaper column and was the subject of a UCSF exhibition showcasing her 30 year modeling career.
Bernice Iwamoto returns to Art Viewing Adventures with Rodney to show images of Allen and discuss her career. As always, the program will be interactive, and Bernice will solicit our reactions to the images she displays.

Rodney has been leading Zoom-based art tours long before shelter-in-place, as a way to share art from a distance. In his tours, he provides information to help viewers mine the artworks for meaning based on their own experiences and perceptions.
