Art Viewing Adventures: Amy Sherald’s American Sublime at SFMOMA (Virtual)
January 13 @ 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
The paintings of Amy Sherald (1973) portray Black Americans in settings that seem both iconic and surreal. Though best known for her official portrait of Former First Lady Michelle Obama, most of the people depicted in her works are nonspecific and share the same, dark gray skin tone in settings that can easily be seen as symbolic. Thus, her works suggest a narrative and are great for sparking a discussion. We’re lucky to have a terrific selection on view at SFMOMA through March 9.
Rodney will be joined by fellow museum guide and past Art Viewing Adventures guest Nick Despota. We’ll solicit input from participants and our conversation should be helpful both for those who have seen the exhibition and those preparing to go.
