In a recent University of Michigan Poll on Healthy Aging, a revelation emerged: individuals aged between 50 and 80 who engage regularly with music, whether listening or singing, enjoy many health benefits. From an elevated mood to reduced stress, lowered blood pressure, and decreased pain, the positive effects of music on well-being are profound. However, these findings are no surprise to those in CLC’s Chinese Language Singing Class.
“I have loved singing and listening to music since childhood because singing benefits people’s health. It can express one’s inner feelings, reduce depression, enhance lung vitality, and improve immunity. Singing can enrich our lives in our later years,” said one participant.
“When I hear my classmates singing, I feel happy and can learn other people’s skills and knowledge. It’s good for my health, right!” said another class member.
The CLC’s weekly gatherings, conducted via Zoom every Tuesday and Thursday from 3 to 4:00 pm, are a testament to the transformative power of music. With a membership of 80-90 individuals, the group delves into the enchanting realm of Mandarin and Cantonese melodies, guided by their instructor, Justyna To. Together, they immerse themselves in learning and performing songs, finding solace and connection in harmonious melodies.
“I appreciate others singing. Singing can express feelings and is good for both body and mind,” said one participant.
“My singing level is not very high, but I still want to learn, so I must be patient and ask for advice. Thank you for imparting knowledge in this class,” said a classmate.
For many, the class is more than just a musical pursuit—it’s a lifeline, especially during challenging times. Amidst the isolation of the pandemic, many in CLC’s computer class expressed a desire for creative expression and communal joy. The desire led to CLC holding a one-time celebration that drew 150 people to share their musical talents. However, many CLC participants wanted to keep going, so the CLC Chinese Singing Class was born.
“Thank you, Wanda Liu, the Chinese Community Program Manager, for organizing the class and supporting us with technical problems! I hope the class can continue! It enriches our lives and sings our sunset red. Singing can bring us happiness! If you are in a happy mood, your body will be healthy! Thanks! Gratitude! And I wish both teachers good health! Happiness!” said one participant.
The camaraderie and sense of purpose fostered within the class are palpable, creating an environment where learning and enjoyment intertwine effortlessly. Whether you’re a seasoned vocalist or a novice enthusiast, all are welcome to join the musical festivities.
“Music has a way of lifting our spirits and connecting us. I’m thankful for this opportunity to sing and grow together,” remarked a classmate.
In a world where the pressures of aging can weigh heavily, the CLC Chinese Singing Class stands as a testament to the enduring power of music to uplift spirits, foster connection, and nurture holistic well-being. As the melodies soar and voices unite, it’s clear that music is the ultimate conductor of harmony and health in the symphony of life.
Come and join the fun! You don’t need to be a music expert—just bring your love for melodies and an open heart. Let’s make beautiful music together.
