Mel Makes St. Francis Square Feel Good

December 4, 2020 by Deborah Finestone

Each year, our Good Neighbor Awards honor some of the dedicated neighbors who volunteer their time to help seniors and people with disabilities get the resources and support they need to age and thrive in their own homes and neighborhoods. We are delighted to honor Mel as our 2020 Good Neighbor Honoree for  St. Francis Square.

Mel Simmons, the “Mayor of the Fillmore,” has long contributed to the greater good in our whole community and now he includes us at St. Francis Square Cooperative.

He makes the “Feelin Good in the Fillmore” campaign a reality, which is just one sign of his contributions to our community.

Even more impressively, Mayor London Breed also noted his work at the Booker T. Washington Community Center.

His ties to the community go way back. Hs youth-oriented art studio at Fillmore and O’Farrell that’s now a bagel shop.

Speaking of bagels, Mel wrangled up goodies for St. Francis Square the past 10 years. That included fresh bagels, French bread from a local bakery and unsold fruit from the Farmers Market. Because being a good neighbor includes treating each other and sharing.
