Art Viewing Adventures: Around Group f.64 Exhibition at SFMOMA

April 15, 2025 by Maia Veres

The Around f.64 exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art focuses on a key moment in photographic history, celebrating the f.64 group—a collective of photographers who played a pivotal role in shaping the visual language of 20th-century photography. The exhibition often emphasizes the unique approach to clarity, sharpness, and attention to detail that these photographers brought to their work.  The exhibition includes images by Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham and Edward Weston as well as many other photographers they influenced.  Rodney Paul will be joined by Verena Lukas, Robert Tat and Charlie Goldberg to discuss their takeaways from this museum show.

Art Viewing Adventures: Battle of Pavia Tapestries

April 15, 2025 by Maia Veres

On February 24, 1525, a decisive moment in European history took place around the town of Pavia, outside of Milan. The imperial army of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V defeated the forces led by King Francis I, ending three years of war and stopping French encroachment into Italian territories. The seven monumental Battle of Pavia tapestries celebrate this historic victory and immerse viewers in the world of Renaissance politics, art, and fashion. During the Renaissance, tapestries were the art form of kings and popes, prized as lavish displays of wealth and power, woven on a grand scale by vast workshops, using precious materials, and costing exponentially more than paintings. Yet few of these tapestry sets have survived and even fewer are on display. The enormous tapestries, each measuring approximately 27 by 14 feet, were recently displayed at the de Young Museum.  Rodney’s friend and fellow museum guide Kathryn Zupsic will join us to discuss them.
